Appointment of new President

Following the resignation of Dallas Drake, the Board has appointed Matt Toomey as the new Club President.

By way of background, Matt is a Chartered Accountant who is currently the Associate Director of Accounting & Reporting at the University of Queensland, an entity with just under $2 billion in annual revenue. His responsibilities include financial reporting and cash flow forecasting.

Matt has been a Board member of Golf Queensland since 2011 and currently chairs the Finance & Risk Committee and Junior Advisory Committee. He has sat on several Golf Australia sub-committees and has been the manager of the Queensland team for the Australian Men’s Inter-State Teams Matches since 2012.

Matt has been a member of Virginia since 1990. He has served 6 years as Captain and has played for the men’s pennant team for 23 consecutive years. The Board believes that Matt’s financial acumen and knowledge of the golf industry make him the best fit for the role as the Club returns to profitability.

Resignation of Acting General Manager

In March 2015, the Club engaged the services of Simon Parker to act as the part-time General Manager of the Club. Having worked previously at Brisbane and Wynnum Golf Clubs, Simon’s expertise has been invaluable over the past 9 months. He has helped the Board implement several key strategic initiatives including an improved accounting system, an organisational structure review, clubhouse roof repairs, function room terrace enhancements, and the new members’ cards.

Simon has advised that he has accepted a position away from the golf industry and will be leaving us on 8 January 2016. The Board thanks Simon for his service and wish him all the best for the future.

The Board are currently seeking a replacement for the role and details will be announced as soon as possible.

Annual General Meeting

As many members would be aware, the 2015 annual general meeting was prematurely halted due to a medical emergency involving Dallas Drake. All agenda items had been covered with the exception of questions from the floor on the annual report and financial report.

Given the circumstances, the Board has obtained legal advice and deemed the meeting as closed. If any members have any questions they did not get a chance to ask on the night, they can send them through to gm@virginiagolf.com.au. Representatives from the Board will arrange to speak with you so as to provide answers.
